While doing research for my next Youkai article i felt watching a movie for a break (instead freezing to death going outside :P). I borrowed the dvd 'Crying Ladies' from the cult video store Next Page where a volunteer colleague recommended me. The movie from the Phillipines was surprisely hilarious, charming and heart warming!
The story is about three mourners, the 'crying ladies' who are hired to cry at a traditional Chinese funeral. The main character is Stella, a young mother with a criminal past. About losing her son to her ex she needs cash to spent quality time with her son. Meanwhile somewhere else in the city Wilson is arranging the funeral of his father. His mother insist to have a traditional funeral including professional mourners and soon Wilson met Stella who is happy to do the well paid job.
Crying Ladies by Mark Meily (Philippines)
It starts to be hilarious when she asks two friends to join the crying club, a b-movie actress and an orphanage volunteer who cheats on her best friend. It's a bit like a drama series, but without the cheesiness and hard reality where the characters trying to survive and deal with it. Also the thought of total strangers who are hired to cry at your funeral is very interesting, a tradition which seems to disappear in the modern Asian society. Very pleasant movie for the dark days with a smile and maybe a tear :P.
Hmmmm have to continue the article (@_____@) and another book review....
